The Spitfire Memorial Defence Fellowship was established by ex-wartime Spitfire pilots and ground crew led by Ted Sly, the Australian Spitfire Association and leading private and corporate supporters. The aim was to create a lasting and dynamic memorial highlighting the important contribution of the Spitfire and its Squadrons during World War II. Through the combined efforts of those involved, the capital of the Spitfire Memorial Fund has reached approximately $480,000. The interest on this capital provides for the annual Fellowship, currently valued at $18,000. The recipient must undertake a defined program of research which will contribute to the defence of Australia.

The winner of the 2010 award was Dr Wenyi Yan of Monash University, for his project titled Numerical investigation of brain injury caused by blasts. The award was presented by the Governor General, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce, at a ceremony held at Government House on December 7, 2009. Also present at this glittering occasion were the three most recent awardees: Dr Nigel Greenwood, Dr Andrew Neely (UNSW), and MAJ Keirin Joyce of the Army Engineers. Remarks were also delivered by Mr Lysle Roberts of the Spitfire Association, himself a former Spitfire pilot.
