2011 SPECIAL SEMINARS

Date: 8 December 2011
Presenter: Professor Marcus Aldén
Venue/Time: SL1, Building 21, 1300hours
Topic: Further development and application of laser diagnostics techniques for combustion studies

Abstract:
Different laser diagnostic techniques have become very important tools in the understanding of combustion processes.  In the current presentation some further development and application will be reviewed, including the use of an Alexandrite laser for visualization of CH, multiple parameter (time&space) visualization and the use of thermographic phosphors for thermometry.  Special time will also be devoted to some future challenges, and is specific spatially resolved detection of "new" species, measurements in areas with limited optical access as well as measurements in optical dense media where multiple scattering may obscure the information of interest.

Biography:
Professor Marcus Aldén received his MS in Engineering Physics in 1978 at Chalmers University of Technology in Göteborg and his PhD in Physics at Lund University in 1983.  Since 1991, he has been the Head of the Division of Combustion Physics and he became Professor within the Physics Department at Lund University in 1992.  Since 1997, Prof. Aldén has been Program director of the National Swedish Centre in Combustion Science and Technology.

Prof. Aldén was Chairman of the Gordon Conference on Laser Diagnostics in Combustion in 2003, and served as Program co-Chair of the 31st International Symposium on Combustion in Heidelberg in 2006. In 2010 was appointed vice-President of the Combustion Institute.  He has been ranked among the top ten Swedish scientists in the area of Natural Sciences and Technology and he is a member of The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and The  Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences.

Prof. Aldén has co-authored about 250 refereed journal papers, most of them in the field of laser/optical diagnostics of combustion and high temperature systems.  His scientific activities have ranged from very fundamental studies of laser-matter interactions to real-world industrial applications.  His scientific contributions include the first multiple- point spatially-resolved LIF measurements in flames, the first detection of oxygen atoms and CO molecules in flames, the development of dual-broadband rotational CARS, spatially resolved polarization spectroscopy applied in flames and the development of a high repetition rate laser/detector system for studies of flames and engines and the development of thermographic phosphors for combustion applications.
